Over 11 million American households own freshwater fish, which shows these critters make fabulous pets.

Fish are popular companions because they’re low-maintenance, require little room, and have calming effects, excellent news if you’ve got anxiety. Perhaps you’ve dreamed about owning a home aquarium, but you’re not sure which freshwater fish make the best pets.

Sounds like you? Don’t worry, you’ve come to the right place. Here are five breeds to check out.

1. Betta Fish

One of the most popular types of freshwater fish is betta fish. These come in an array of colors and shapes, depending on your preference. But before buying several for your fish tank, know the male bettas should be separated from others as they can be aggressive.

2. Neon Tetra

Want mesmerizing pets in your freshwater fish tank? Then, treat your household to a family of neon tetras.

You’ve likely seen these thin, colorful fish flitter around other home aquariums. A major benefit is that neon tetras don’t grow big and are renowned for being calm. But your collection isn’t complete without checking out copepods for aquariums

If you like this type of fish then try beacon fish, who are related to neon tetras. This is obvious because of their same calm demeanor. In fact, the real name for this type of fish is the “head-and-tail-light tetra” because of their markings. You’ll notice that the bright copper spots look like a vehicle’s.

But it’s important to note, this species thrives in low-light settings and with plenty of plants where they hide.

3. Harlequin Rasbora

Homeowners who are after unique freshwater fish should check out harlequin rasbora. These are tiny fish that are distinctive, thanks to their bright, ruby skin. You can find an array of different colors, depending on the size of your tank, and work well as a community, which is perfect if you already have several.

4. Zebra Danios

The zebra danios fish is fantastic for beginners because they are low-maintenance. Plus, these fish are small and you can feed them regular fish flake food. Or, if you want to spice things up, these critters love worms and tiny insects.

But, because they are schooling fish, it’s important to keep them in groups.

5. Hachetfish

If you want to make a statement, then the best freshwater fish for your tank is the hatchetfish.

These are defined by their compressed body shape and wing-like fins. Anyone who has hatchet fish should understand how to raise fish because they have specific tank requirements like a 20-gallon tank. This is because hatchetfish are schooling fish, which means they should have at least 10 companions.
