Born in New York City, Manhattan, De Niro studied acting at HB Studio, Stella Adler Conservatory and Actors Studio at Lee Strasberg. In Greetings (1968) was his first major onscreen appearance. With his appearance as a Major League Baseball player in the sports drama Bang the Drum Slowly (1973), he soon won recognition.

His first collaboration with Scorsese occurred in Mean Streets (1973), where he played the small-time criminal “Johnny Boy”.Stardom followed soon after with his role as the young Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Part II (1974), which won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. For his portrayal of Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver (1976), and a soldier in the Vietnam War drama The Deer Hunter, both roles earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

In 1980, in Scorsese’s biographical thriller, Raging Bull, De Niro played Jake LaMotta, who earned him a second Academy Award for Best Actor. In The King of Comedy (1982), he diversified into comedic roles, such as playing a stand-up comedian, and received more recognition for his performances in Sergio Leone ‘s crime epic Once Upon a Time in America (1984), Brazil’s science fiction dystopian satire in (1985), the religious epic The Mission (1986), and the comedy Midnight Run (1988).  De Niro entered the 1990s in the crime film Good fellas (1990) portraying gangster Jimmy Conway, a catatonic patient in the drama Awakenings (1990), and as a suspect in the psychological thriller Cape Fear (1991). The three films all earned acclaim for the performances of De Niro.
